Serpentine Yoga Pose
(Salamba Sarvangasana) is a basic yet challenging yoga pose that is great for all levels of students. The name serpentine comes from the long, sinuous shape of the body in the pose. This pose is excellent for improving spinal flexibility and improving the health of the thyroid and parathyroid glands.
To come into the pose, start by lying flat on your back on the mat. Place your palms flat on the floor beside your body with your fingertips pointing towards your feet. Bring your legs up into the air, and then slowly lower them down towards the floor on the right side of your body. Keep your left leg straight and your right leg bent, with your foot resting on your left ankle. Remain here for a few breaths, then switch sides.
