History of Yoga

Today you can find yoga practitioners on all continents including Antarctica!
In India, yoga was passed down orally from teacher to student and was developed as a spiritual practice in Hinduism, Jainism and Buddhism. As it spread from India it adapted to become something more than just physical postures; incorporating philosophy, breath control, chanting and an overall stress-free lifestyle. As it made its way West it further adapted into what we call modern day “yoga” which is a combination of many different practices but typically centers around Hatha style postures (asanas). A number of influential figures have helped to popularize yoga by turning it into a mainstream practice in society today including Swami Vivekananda who believed that through his teachings of spirituality he could help strengthen one’s mind, body and soul.
