History of Yoga
The history of Yoga can be traced back to ancient Hinduism. The term ‘Yoga’ is Sanskrit, and has many different meanings, but most essentially it translates as ‘union’ or ‘connection’. Many scholars believe that the beginnings of yoga date back to the Indus-Sarasvati civilization over 5,000 years ago depending on which interpretation is believed.
Yoga has a written and oral tradition known in various India texts (like Vedas and Upanishads). Yoga appeared sporadically in the next centuries in various Hindu ritualized practices. In its development, philosophical knowledge of meditation and spiritual enlightenment were combined with physical exercises. Soon yoga became a way of life, as it was not just about physical flexibility but also mental and spiritual well-being.
