What is yoga? It has been an object of fascination to the Western world since its discovery more than four thousand years ago. Described as the practice of ‘a perfect fusion of body and mind’, it combines physical exercises with controlled breathing, meditation, and traditional meditative techniques (asanas). Yoga is one of the principal six Āstika disciplines of Indian spiritual traditions. Originated in India, it has come to be known as one of the foremost exercise systems in the world.
What is yoga is an interesting question that deserves several answers. The answer largely depends upon one’s circumstances, motivation, purpose, and experience. In this article, we will attempt to define the term and describe various types of yoga. The word ‘yoga’ is derived from a Sanskrit term meaning “union”. The discipline is aimed at uniting the body, mind, and spirit by means of proper breathing and postures.
A large part of yoga sutras is concerned with how the postures affect the mind and the spirit. Several ancient yogis or yoginis (a person who practices yoga) have wrote hundreds of works on the subject. The most famous of these is the ancient Yogi Sutras, composed by Patanjali.
The Yoga Sutras is divided into two sections. One deals with teaching yoga. The other consists of admonishments (doshas), showing the various evil effects of selfishness (tanpura), being heedless (vyasa), and harming others (mahasrta). To be a qualified yoga teacher, one must study and complete all sections of these sutras.
Since the purpose of yoga is to unite the body, mind, and spirit, yoga teachers must know how to lead students in a way that will encourage self-study, growth, and eventually, full enlightenment. It is up to the yoga teacher to know when to discourage a student from pursuing an exercise that may not be suitable for them, such as performing a pose on your back, or trying an exotic technique. For example, while beginners may be able to do some poses on their own, more advance practitioners need assistance. A qualified yoga instructor knows which techniques are appropriate for which age group, how to explain each pose to a beginner, and how to give practical instruction.
Most yoga teachers prefer to teach in schools that have open enrollment. This means anyone can attend. Students are free to pursue yoga classes in private studios, thanks to the efforts of local yoga organizations. In public classes, a student must be enrolled with the local yoga association in order to be granted entrance. It is also possible to find yoga teachers willing to teach at weekend sessions that the local school may not accommodate.
Once a yoga student has completed his or her formal training, the student should take a test that will evaluate his or her progress. Students should be able to pass this test before graduating. Instructors will look for student progress in order to determine the level of instruction a student needs. Instructors will often want students to go beyond just basic yoga certification training. Some instructors want their students to complete a full series of yoga certifications, including yoga exercises and posture. Other instructors are happy to see their student’s start with basic certifications and then go on to complete more advanced certifications.
