Tips for Beginners

If you are a beginner practicing Modo Yoga in Portland, there are several tips to help you get the best out of your practice:

1. Start slow and focus on your breath: when beginning a practice it can be easy to forget the importance of focusing on your breath and moving slowly. Take the time to connect with your body and use each flow to explore how the breath moves through your body.

2. Ask for assistance: Modo Yoga has wonderful teachers who are always happy to provide assistance if you’re unsure about something or feeling overwhelmed during class. Don’t be shy – simply ask for help!

3. Have an open mind: Modo Yoga is all about exploring different poses and allowing yourself to become comfortable with all types of yoga postures – so keep an open mind, push yourself gently and be patient with yourself as you learn.

4. Listen to your body: Sometimes in yoga we move faster than our bodies are able – this can lead to injury, fatigue, or even physical pain. So always listen to what your body is telling you and modify postures when needed so that you can stay safe and avoid hurting yourself during class time.

FAQs

What should I wear?

We recommend wearing comfortable, fitted clothes that you can move and stretch in. Tank tops and short shorts are great, as well as breathable fabrics that won’t trap heat. In most cases, students don’t wear shoes during class.

What supplies should I bring with me?

It is necessary to bring a yoga mat with you since we do not provide them in the studio. Some folks also bring a water bottle or other hydration items, an eye pillow for relaxation poses, and a towel or two for sweat or humidity management. You may also wish to have a block or bolster for certain poses; we have these items available for rent if needed.

Are there showers at Modo Yoga Portland?

Yes! We have both men’s and women’s showers available onsite; we provide shampoo, conditioner and body wash free of charge. Additionally towels can be rented from the front desk if needed.
