Yoga as a Mindfulness Practice
One of the most popular forms of self-care nowadays is to practice mindfulness. But what exactly is mindfulness, and can modern exercise, such as yoga, be considered a form of mindfulness?
What is mindfulness?
Mindfulness is making a conscious effort to be aware of the present and to reflect on one’s thoughts and feelings without judgement. It can involve practices such as:
- Breathing exercises and meditations
- Drinking tea without distraction
- Focusing on one task without multi-tasking
- Using stock-taking techniques to reflect on one’s accomplishments
In a world where distractions can often take over our lives, mindfulness can be a great way to take control of our mental state and our well-being.
Yoga as a mindfulness practice
Yoga is often seen as a physical form of exercise, and while this is true, it can also be a mindful practice. Yoga can involve holding poses (known as asanas) which increase flexibility and strength while allowing practitioners to focus on their breath and their inner being. The idea is to move inward and to become present in the moment, noticing any physical and mental sensations that may arise. In this way, yoga can be both a physical practice and a mindfulness practice.
Some forms of yoga, such as Yin and Kundalini, are particularly focused on mindfulness. They emphasise the use of breath and the focus of the mind in order to relax and restore both the body and mind.
Benefits of yoga as a mindfulness practice
Yoga can be an incredibly powerful form of mindfulness. Practising yoga can help people to:
- Decrease levels of stress and anxiety
- Increase self-awareness and self-acceptance
- Connect with their emotions
- Improve focus and concentration
- Feel more at peace and in harmony with the world around them
Mindfulness is an important part of self-care and yoga can offer a great way to become more in tune with oneself and with the world around us.
So, if you’re looking for a way to take care of yourself and to become more mindful and aware, why not try yoga?
