# Does Taoism Practice Yoga?
Taoism is a school of thought in ancient Chinese philosophy that emphasizes living in harmony with nature. The Yin and Yang symbol associated with Taoism reflects its teachings of balance and unity. On the other hand, yoga is an ancient Indian practice of physical and mental disciplines aimed at achieving spiritual development. Although the two have some commonalities, their primary approaches and philosophies vary.
## What is Taoism?
Taoism is a Chinese philosophy based on the teachings of the ancient sage Lao Tzu, who wrote the seminal text “Tao Te Ching”. Taoism seeks to promote balance, harmony and unity between humans and nature. The primary emphasis of Taoism is on living life as simply and authentically as possible. Taoists avoid trying to control life and instead let it take its natural course.
## What is Yoga?
Yoga is an ancient Indian practice that combines physical poses, breathing exercises, and meditation. The goal of yoga is to achieve spiritual development and self-awareness. Yoga is designed to enable practitioners to focus on the present moment and disconnect from the stresses of daily life. It encourages mindfulness, balance, and inner peace.
## Similarities Between Taoism and Yoga
Despite their very different origins, Taoism and yoga share some key principles.

## Differences Between Taoism and Yoga
While Taoism and yoga have many similarities, they also have some significant differences.

* Taoism views life as being in a state of perfect equilibrium, while yoga encourages progress and development
* Taoism is critical of hierarchy and outward appearances, while yoga provides a structure of stages of growth and development
## Does Taoism Practice Yoga?
Although Taoism and yoga share some common principles, it can be said that Taoism does not practice yoga because it does not involve the physical and mental exercises of yoga. Taoism emphasizes living in balance with nature and having a nonjudgmental attitude towards life, while yoga focuses on self-development and reaching personal enlightenment. Ultimately, Taoists believe that enlightenment is found in understanding the natural order of the universe and living in harmony with it, and is not necessarily about achieving a certain level of physical or mental achievement.
