Beginners Yoga Workout
Hey everyone,
If you’re new to yoga, or just looking for a more challenging workout, I’ve put together a sequence of poses that will get your heart rate up and your muscles working!
This sequence is a great way to start your day, or to use as a break in the middle of your day. It will take about 20-30 minutes to complete.
1. Sun Salutation A (Surya Namaskar A)
This sequence of poses is a great way to start your yoga practice. It warms up your body and gets your heart rate up.
Start in Mountain Pose (Tadasana). Inhale and reach your arms overhead, clasp your hands together and stretch up.
Exhale and step or jump back to Downward-Facing Dog Pose (Adho Mukha Svanasana). Inhale and reach your left leg up, then exhale and switch legs.
Inhale and return to Downward-Facing Dog Pose. Exhale and step or jump forward to Mountain Pose.
Inhale and reach your arms overhead. Exhale and bow forward, forehead resting on your mat.
2. Chair Pose (Utkatasana)
This is a great pose to strengthen your thighs and glutes.
Start in Mountain Pose. Inhale and reach your arms overhead. Exhale and bend your knees, sitting back like you’re sitting in a chair.
Keep your back straight and your core engaged. Hold for 5-10 breaths, then inhale and slowly stand back up.
3. Warrior I (Virabhadrasana I)
This is a great pose to strengthen your thighs, glutes, and core.
Start in Mountain Pose. Inhale and reach your arms overhead. Exhale and step or jump your left foot back, then your right foot back.
Turn your left foot in so your toes are pointing towards the front of your mat. Bend your left knee and sink your hips down towards the floor.
Reach your arms up towards the sky, keeping your shoulders down. Hold for 5-10 breaths, then switch sides.
4. Triangle Pose (Trikonasana)
This is a great pose to stretch your hamstrings and open your chest.
Start in Warrior I Pose. Inhale and reach your right arm up towards the sky.
Exhale and reach your right hand down towards your right ankle. Keep your hips facing forward and your core engaged.
Hold for 5-10 breaths, then switch sides.
5. Camel Pose (Ustrasana)
This is a great pose to stretch your chest and open your hips.
Start in Tabletop Pose. Inhale and reach your right arm up towards the sky.
Exhale and reach your right hand back towards your right heel. Keep your hips facing forward and your core engaged.
If you can, reach your left hand up towards the sky. Hold for 5-10 breaths, then switch sides.
6. Child’s Pose (Balasana)
This is a great pose to relax your body and mind.
Start in Tabletop Pose. Inhale and reach your right arm up towards the sky.
Exhale and reach your right hand back towards your right heel. Keep your hips facing forward and your core engaged.
If you can, reach your left hand up towards the sky. Hold for 5-10 breaths, then switch sides.
7. Downward-Facing Dog Pose (Adho Mukha Svanasana)
This is a great pose to stretch your hamstrings and open your chest.
Start in Tabletop Pose. Inhale and reach your right arm up towards the sky.
Exhale and reach your right hand back towards your right heel. Keep your hips facing forward and your core engaged.
If you can, reach your left hand up towards the sky. Hold for 5-10 breaths, then switch sides.
